Honoring My Father’s Legacy Through Gardening
Last year, the Biggs Road Community Garden remained unplanted—not out of neglect,
but out of grief. In May 2024, I lost my father, the man who taught me the power of a
seed, the patience of a gardener, and the joy of giving through the land. His passing left
a void in my heart and the garden he inspired me to nurture.
My father was the first to place a trowel in my hands. He showed me how to break the
soil, plant with intention, and tend with care. More than that, he taught me that
gardening is not just about what we grow—it’s about who we nourish. Through him, I
learned that food is love, and sharing a harvest is one of the purest ways to give.
It was his encouragement that led me to community gardening. He believed in feeding
people, in neighbors helping neighbors, and in the idea that no one should go without
fresh, healthy food if we have the means to provide it. His values live on in every row we
plant, in every seedling we nurture, and in every family that finds nourishment in this
space.
Last season, as I navigated the weight of loss, I couldn’t bring myself to plant. The
garden, like me, needed time to rest, to heal. But this year, with my father’s spirit guiding
my hands, we are planting again. Every sprout will be a tribute to his legacy, a reminder
of his generosity, and a continuation of the love he instilled in me.
The Biggs Road Community Garden is more than just a place to grow food—it’s a place
to honor those who have shaped us, to build connections, and to give back. As we
prepare the beds and sow new seeds, we do so with renewed purpose, carrying forward
the lessons he so lovingly passed down.
This season, every harvest will be in his memory.
We hope to see you soon as we continue to grow.
